A Steady Presence, A Guiding Force, A Quiet Strength

Billy moved through life the way ocean waves meet the shore. Steady and constant, both powerful and calm, gently shaping everything they touch.

Whether he was with family, friends, teammates, or co-workers, he never liked the spotlight. He loved to support others and help them shine. He made the hard conversations easier, the tough times more tolerable, and somehow, always knew exactly what people needed— a late night chat, an extra hand, or simply making sure the kitchen was clean.

He led from the spaces in between, where real strength lives. 💙

Billy made people think, made them laugh, and left a lasting impression. But it wasn’t just those moments—it was the way he showed up, the connections he made, and the way he made people feel.

THE BILLY FACTOR is about honoring him by showing up for others, making a difference in small ways, and carrying forward his quiet impact.

Donations will go toward meaningful acts of support—for kids in school and sports, for animals, for friends, neighbors, and even strangers. A helping hand when no one’s watching. A moment of unconditional kindness that restores your faith in humanity. A quiet reminder that you're not alone.

So anytime you are near the ocean, think of him, and he will be there. The water was his place of peace, his place of power, and his place of respite. And just like the tides, his presence will ebb and flow, but never disappear.

Please share privately — not on social media. Let’s see how far we can make OUR ripples of quiet impact go.

In the meantime, we’ll be busy finding people for him to quietly help… and when he does, we’ll let you know how and when he did it. 😉

William B. "Billy" Johnston III

William (“Billy”) Johnston passed away peacefully on December 20, 2024, at his home in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Billy was born on February 9, 1966, at Landstuhl Army Hospital in Germany to William Beard Johnston, Jr. and Jane Cutting (Smart) Johnston. The family later returned to Alexandria, Virginia, where Billy was raised alongside his older sister and two younger brothers. He graduated from Fort Hunt High School in 1984, where he excelled in nearly every sport and was known as “A Man for All Seasons.”

In 1988, Billy earned a degree in Math with a minor in Computer Science from Virginia Tech and went on to build a respected career as an IT Process Architect, helping restore critical infrastructure at the Pentagon after 9/11, and later earning an ITIL Master Certification, a credential held by fewer than 1,000 professionals worldwide.

But Billy’s greatest impact was never about titles or awards—it was about the steady, thoughtful way he showed up for people. He was a quiet force of kindness and strength. Effortlessly affable and witty, everyone liked him from the moment they met him. Billy was a natural teacher with a rare ability to lead from within and make complex ideas clear—whether bridging the gap between colleagues or tutoring kids, he loved helping people understand.

Billy and his wife, Vicki (Bartok) Johnston, built a life together over 30 years shaped by love, companionship, humor, and a deep intellectual connection that defined their relationship.

Exceptional at math, Billy handled all the number crunching in their real estate ventures while Vicki planned the details. They shared 11 homes together over the years, but Lake Anna was his favorite. Billy loved his boat, the water, picking crabs on the dock, and sitting by the campfire with good company. They later found their way back to the water in Virginia Beach, where the living room was designed in a boat theme just for him.

Fiercely independent but never without canine companions—his own or those of friends, family, and neighbors—his dogs were a constant source of joy, unwavering loyalty, and cleanly licked plates.

Annie, Charlotte and Monty loved him more than anything.
